Fite class curriculum

Throughout the year, our students will have the ability to train just as career firefighters and EMTs do. We work to utilize relevant textbooks, equipment, and skills activities. This is a unique opportunity for students to experience a sample of what it is like to go through a Fire Academy or EMT class while being in a high school environment. Our hope is that with this exposure, students will either be well equipped when taking the leap into a full-time career or be able to decide whether the Fire or Emergency Medical Services pathway is right for them.

For a better understanding of what students will go through by taking our class, we have listed out below what our class format looks like, what curriculum we use, and some of the special activities and field trips we take throughout the year.

Weekly Class Format

  • Monday / Tuesday: New Fire or EMS Chapters and special projects
  • Wednesday: "Workout Wednesday" where we will be doing some sort of physical training
  • Thursday / Friday: Drill Days at the Skills Center or a local fire station. This can be either Fire or EMS where students will learn the hands-on skills that go along with the chapters.

Textbooks

  • IFSTA Essentials of Firefighting (7th Edition)
  • AAOS Emergency Care and Transportation for the Sick and Injured (12th Edition)

  • Firefighting Skills
  • Emergency Medical Skills
  • BLS-CPR & First Aid

Special Events and Field Trips

  • What's Next Night: A special event in the evening where we discuss popular Fire/EMS career opportunities and college education pathways.
  • Auto Extrication Day: Students will get to practice cutting up cars as Firefighters do using a variety of extrication tools such as the jaws of life, spreaders, cutters, etc.
  • Community Service Events: Students will participate in various community service events organized by themselves or peers to promote a life of civil services.
  • FITE Scholarship Interviews: In the 2nd semester, students will work through the Interview Prep Project where they learn about how to professionally present themselves in a fire service interview. At the end of the project, students will participate in a series of Board interviews with real fire service professionals for a chance at FITE Scholarships!
  • North Bend Fire Academy: Towards the end of the year, students will take a field trip to the Washington State Fire Training Academy in North Bend for a day full of professional firefighter training and actual firefighting activities!
